On sekizinci yüzyılın sonu ve on dokuzuncu yüzyılın başında Fransa'da yaşanan siyasi karışıklıklar nedeniyle inşası 85 yıl sürmüştür. Dönemin siyasi değişiklikleri binanın amacında ve planlarında bir dizi değişikliğe yol açmıştır. I. Napolyon tarafından 1806 yılında Grande Armée'nin zaferine adanmış bir Yunan tapınağı olarak tasarlanan bina, 1845 yılında kilise olmadan önce 1837 yılında Paris'te bir ilk olarak neredeyse bir tren istasyonuna dönüştürülmüştür. Alınlığın altında Latince yazıt "D.O.M. SVB. INVOC. S. M. MAGDALENAE" ("Domino Optimo Maximo sub invocatione Sanctae Mariae Magdalenae") "Aziz Mary Magdalene'nin çağrısı altında en iyi ve büyük Tanrı'ya" anlamına gelmektedir.
