According to the legend, the first miracle related to the 12th century wooden Maria statue of Mariazell happened to a monk named Marcus. When he travelled with the statue, at some point his way was blocked by a huge rock. He prayed to Maria, the result was that the rock became split into two parts, after which he could continue his journey. Mariazell became the largest place of Christian pilgrimage in Austria, with millions of visitors.
