10 Mark

The first emergency money was issued in Ludwigshafen on October 11, 1918 and in Frankenthal on October 10, after the Reichsbankstelle in Ludwigshafen had informed the city administration on October 4 that the Reichsbank directorate in Berlin could no longer meet the increased need for means of payment and one therefore suggesting that the city administration issue emergency money. Therefore, at its meeting on October 11, 1918, the city council decided to issue paper emergency notes with the nominal values of five, ten, 20 and 50 marks, which were valid until February 1, 1919.

The court book printing company Weiß & Hameier, which was equipped to print bonds, accepted to print the money. So that no fraud could take place during printing, a check was carried out by the municipal cash controller, assisted by officials from the city treasury.

Banknotes of 5, 10, 20 and 50 Marks were printed in total 683,385 pieces with a total value of 14,563,500 marks.
Because of the shortage of means of payment that still existed in 1919, the district president extended the validity of the emergency notes in the Palatinate region until April 1, 1919. Initially, the 50-mark notes lost their validity on March 31 and until April 30, 1919 also the five , Ten and 20 mark notes. The remuneration was cashless for banks and public funds. Only private individuals received cash when exchanging. As of the cut-off date, 4083 notes had been redeemed, which represented a value of 72,395 marks. The redemption continued until 1920 because there were no counterfeits of this paper emergency money, so that ultimately 1356 notes with a value of 14,185 marks were never redeemed.
