Even though the Pesos was introduced in 1975, Banknotes of the Escudo were not officially withdrawn(by Decree Law N. 1123 Article 3; and Article 9) but formally, due to the rising inflation and the replacement of early banknotes with coins, these banknotes lost all of their worth by 1980. The Central Bank of Chile was not banned from printing or spending(until 31 December 1976, but only spendings authorized by the Ministry of Finance) the currency but they were required to be valued in the new currency unit or to be stamped with the new currency unit.
