On October 13, 1957, the East German government launched "Operation Blitz," a massive exchange of banknotes. On that day, new banknotes in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 DM were issued, featuring different colors and watermarks, all bearing the year "1955." The previous banknotes from 1948, with the exception of the 50-pfennig and 1-DM notes, were withdrawn from circulation. On October 13, 1957, between noon and 10 p.m., citizens could exchange their 1948 banknotes, up to a maximum total value of 300 DM, for new 1948 banknotes at a 1:1 ratio upon presentation of their identity card. All larger sums had to be deposited into special frozen accounts until October 19, 1957.
