A highly ornate frame topped with a double-headed eagle encloses the central illustration and text elements, corners contain ornate panels with the number “250” inside a dark oval frame.. In the center is a large vertical oval medallion with a portrait of Don Cossack M. I. Platov bordered with laurel and ribbon-like flourishes, his name is printed around the inner edge of the frame, flanking the portrait are two seated female figures in classical attire. Below this a rectangular frame contains legal text, and below it is the year “1918” in an oval frame, flanked by signatures.
The serial number “АЗ-62” appears twice, on top left and bottom right of the note. The background across the entire note has a repeating textured pattern composed of the number “250” and the word “РУБ”.

(en) On the first issue "chalk grid" watermark is found, a special coat that can be verified under UV light. Sometimes it can be seen at plain sight as shown in the top left picture. This first issue was also produced on laid paper, so weak horizontal line watermarks can be found at the same time (bottom right, from another denomination).
On the second issue there is a monogram watermark, "ГБ" (Государствснный Банк/State Bank). "Chalk grid" watermark can be found at the same time.
On the third issue we can either find monogram watermark or no watermark.
Immediately after the October Revolution on October 25, 1917 Ataman A. M. Kaledin proclaimed the he refused to subordinate to the Council of the People's Commissars and its decrees. Just like other parts of the former Russian Empire in the autumn of 1918 the Don Cossack Province started to experience shortages of currency.
At the end of 1917 measures were taken in the framework of preparation for the issue of currency notes of the Rostov on Don Main Office of the State Bank. On January 30, 1918 General A. M. Nazarov was elected as the new Don Ataman, soon on February 23, 1918 the Soviets captured Rostov on Don and A. M. Nazarov was seized and shot on March 4, 1918. Under the pressure of the German troops and raised in arms Cossacks the Red Army abandoned Rostov on Don on May 2, 1918. Taganrog and Rostov were occupied by the German Army whereas the rest of the Don Cossack Province fell under control of the Don Ataman Major-General Piotr Nikolaevich Krasnov. He was elected as Ataman by the Assembly for Don Salvation on May 16, 1918. After two days the newly elected Ataman signed an order on setting up the Great Don Cossack Republic.
250 rouble notes were initially printed in the Rostov using paper from the Panchenko Paper Mill, and released into circulation on April 5 1918. There were three issues of 250r. notes; September 1918 (АБ-01…АЖ-34), June 1919 (АЖ-35…АТ-34), and Feb-July 1920 (AT-35…AЬ-45). All issues were produced in Rostov.
On early January 1920 Bolsheviks captured the totality of Rostov for the final time, V. K. Chetyrko assumed as Manager of the Rostov Office of the State Bank, he recommended re-engraving the three most commonly used denominations of Don banknotes, but the new authorities decided to print only one denomination - 250 rubles. Unrestrained emission began under Bolsehvik authorities and in the period of Feb-July 1920 they were issued for a total of 2,435,273,000 rubles (9,741,092 notes). The total number of notes issued its unknown.
After victory, the Don Executive Committee (reds) annulled all “Don” notes in 1920, its estimated that up to that moment the whites had issued 17,467,588,000 rubles in notes from denominations 20k-5000r.
Varieties After bolshevik capture of Rostov engraver Davydov added extra miniature ovals to the pattern, with the intention of allowing white experts to unmistakably separate the “illegitimate” 250 rubles from the real ones.
Two types of specimens are reported too, Type 1 that similar to other notes in the series has the overprint “ОБРАЗЕЦ” (SPECIMEN), on halves. And Type 2 with perforation "135" on halves.
