Las Piedras (= the stones) is a town located 30Km (20 miles) towards north of Montevideo. On May 18th, 1811 a battle was fought, and was the first great victory of the revolutionary forces against the ruling of Spain. The coin shows a detail of the painting about the surrender of Posadas, the commander of the Spanish forces on this battle. During the surrender, Artigas (Uruguayan commander) ordered "Clemencia para los vencidos" (mercy to defeated), this was remarkable as at that times usually the defeated soldiers were killed and only the higher commanders were took prisoners.
