These overprinted notes were issued out of concern for potential invasion and occupation of the territory of Hawaii by Japanese forces. If occupation occurred, the notes could be deemed worthless by the U.S. government. Residents were required to trade their currency for the overprinted notes beginning on June 25, 1942. Use of any other type of U.S. paper money in Hawaii without special permission was declared illegal on August 15, 1942, and the $200 million stockpile of unstamped notes collected on the islands was burned. Emergency monetary conditions were lifted in October 1944, and a recall of the notes began in April 1946. Some of the overprints continued to be used on other Pacific islands recaptured by U.S. forces during World War II.
