Banco Nacional Ultramarino notes destined for Angola, were the first to circulate on the Island in 1868 with overprint "S. Thome". It was only in 1891 that the nation saw its own currency introduced. This banknote was the highest denomination for this initial issuance; and like the 10,000 Reis, was mostly used in commercial transactions as opposed to general, everyday payment methods. It represented an enormous sum of money, which makes the survival of this note remarkable.
