These notes were issued against special accounts held by the Fort Plain Bank for its participating commercial customers. These were treated as denominated checks and were redeemed at the bank rather than across the merchants' counters. Plank, who was listed as a produce dealer with an office in Fort Plain in the June, 1865 New York state census. According to Harris, the partnership of Shearer & Cronkhite was involved in the fancy dry goods and staples business. The 50¢ note does have a large green 50 protector like other denominations listed for this issuer.
