From 1868, German Christians known as Templers moved to Palestine in expectation of the Second Coming of Christ and the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem, settling in Haifa, Jaffa, and Jerusalem and setting up their own communities and institutions. During a shortage of low denomination coinage in the later part of the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Templers produced their own tokens for circulation within their community to make up for this lack of small change.
