Gabriele D'Annunzio commanded dissident soldiers from Monfalcone to Fiume, subsequently proclaiming the city's annexation to Italy on September 22, 1919. The medal was distributed with a blue, yellow, and purple tricolor ribbon. A miniature version was also issued.
