These “Pestthalers,” or Plague Thalers, were minted to commemorate the 1528 plague in Bohemia. Often used as amulets, these were some of the first coins featuring a legend entirely in German. They were created by the famous engraver Ulrich (Utz) Gebhart, who also designed the first thalers in Joachimsthal.
