Comments

(en)

There are at least two documented compositions of this medal. This is the silver plated (patinated) oxidized tombac version that had 450 medals struck. The other composition - for which 70 were struck - is an 800 silver purity version with similar dimensions and weight. “The Ag (silver) symbol is stamped on the edge, along with a punch indicating the basic hallmark for 800 silver (the Polish hallmark used from 1963 to 1986). For precious metal products, the image of a woman indicates a silver product, while the letter K indicates the place of hallmarking, in this case Kraków.”

According to references, “ … Wladyslaw Terlecki was not only one of Mint’s directors (1945-1946), but also a curator of its Coin Cabinet from 1927 to 1940. His famous rescue of the Mint’s collection (from the Nazis) included not only the gold bars, but also the Mint’s numismatic collection: coins and medals produced in the Mint, and the collection of Roman, Greek and Polish coins collected by his father, also named Wladyslaw Terlecki, physician and numismatist.”
