The 40th Infantry Battalion was originally a Tasmanian-raised unit of the First Australian Imperial Force that fought with distinction on the Western Front during World War I. Re-formed during World War II as the 2/40th Battalion, it served as the core of "Sparrow Force" before being captured by Japanese forces in Timor in 1942.
