Comments

(en)

The relationship of the individual “Yusuf b. ‘Abd Allah” to the rest of the Qarakhanid Dynasty is unknown, perhaps a local governor.

This coin approximately represents the midpoint of a fascinating evolution of “Snow Leopards of Chach”, an historical progression of coins depicting snow leopards, made in the Sogdian city of Chach (Islamic: al-Shash), modern day Tashkent, Uzbekistan. This style of coinage was first made under the autonomous rulers of Chach in around the VII-VIII centuries AD. This coin comes a couple hundred years after that, and is followed by anonymous civil copper issues of Tashkent in the XVII-XVIII centuries AD.
