(en) French India refers to smaller areas of India under French control, with the first areas being acquired by the French East India Company in 1664. Throughout its existence, the areas of French India switched between French and British control, but as a result of the Napoleonic Wars (1803–1815), France was able to repossess all its Indian territories. After India gained its independence in 1947, France began ceding its areas back to India, with the four last territories being transferred to India in 1954.
