After the Carolingian coins of the 8th century, it was the counts of Provence who minted coins in Avignon. In 1354, Innocent VI transferred the pontifical mint from Pont-sur-Sorgue to Avignon. The number of workers decreased after the departure of the popes in 1404. The legates, then the vice-legates, in the name of the sovereign pontiff, exercised control over the minting of coins until 1693.
