Description

The Southern Festoon (Zerynthia cassandra) is a beautiful butterfly species endemic to Italy, and has recently also been recorded in the Republic of San Marino. It is highly localized and rare throughout its range, where it survives in small, often isolated populations.

Its presence is closely tied to that of Aristolochia, the only host plant on which its larvae feed. The species is typically found in humid habitats such as stream banks, fallow lands, and field edges, from lowlands up to around 1,000 meters above sea level.

A typically springtime species, it flies from mid-March to the end of May, depending on altitude, and produces only one generation per year.

In Europe, Zerynthia cassandra is protected under the EU Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC) and the Bern Convention. In San Marino, it is safeguarded by Law No. 137 of 19 July 2021 – “Protection of Wild Fauna in the Republic of San Marino.”
