(en) Early Russian silver coins are often referred to as "wire money" due to a distinctive production method of the planchets between the 15th century and the beginning of the 18th century. The minting process began with the melting of imported silver thalers. Subsequently, the silver bars were transformed into wire of the desired diameter. This silver wire was cut into pieces of the desired length, and then flattened. The resulting planchets were struck, like usual, between two dies using a hammer. This unique quality of the planchets resulted in slightly elongated coins, often bearing traces of the original wire.
