How terrible! My sincerest condolences. It’s so hard to say goodbye.
You have my condolences too.
Here in home we got happier news.
This year that bird nest is less emptier than usual. Normally it stays completely empty between January and September, but this year another bird of the same species appeared, took possession of the nest and had an out of season brood in April. And she returned last week, so we are expecting more 2 little birds by the end of the month (as they take approximately 20 days to hatch).

thx and thx slip we have bluebirds who every year for the past 20 years have been making a nest in out nesting jar on our porch every year and sometimes even more than once a year which is odd because bluebirds are usually not so keen making their nests so close to humans

I think that the same applies to hummingbirds, they're very skittish in relation to humans. The hummingbird at home easily gets in “alert mode” if you come too close, and I need to come close as the switch of the outside lights is very near the nest. With practice it's possible to turn on/off the lights without scaring her, the key is being slow and making no sudden moves .
By the way, that's our bird: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swallow-tailed_hummingbird
Update from my previous post: the eggs have hatched.
When I arrived home with my father today after work, the mother bird was away, so I asked him to try to get photos of the eggs. But there were no eggs, there were two tiny newly hatched birds.
(No photos here; since the nest is in a difficult spot to reach the camera is hard to focus and the photos ended blurred, in the end it was just to look at the current situation on the nest)
After a Belgian shepherd and a Newfoundland who will always remain in our hearts, it is now a cat who came, dying of hunger and illness, to knock on our door. And my goodness, he has been well taken care of, now what he prefers, after catching all kinds of animals in the garden, is watching TV from behind.

I adopted this torbie 4 months ago from the SPCA. Her name was Tabitha and she was found pregnant hiding in a back garden. It turned out she had been owned, abused and thrown out when she was pregnant by some reprobate in South Auckland. Or at the best she was a “yard” or “barn” cat.
She was given an abortion and spayed and put out to adoption. When I got her, they claimed she was just over a year old.
August - 8 to 10 months - she still had kitten teeth
The vet said she was actually 8 to 10 months old and I believe looking at these photos from August. I changed her name to Tallulah as Tabitha sounds like something people who have never own anything beyond a yard or barn cat. Also it sounds elegant and camp and I can call her Lula for short (Apparently Lula and Lulabelle were popular racist jazz era names of around 1930).
Anyway a very energetic and youthful cat, she is proving hard to get affectionate with. I love her, but she is not a lap cat, hates being picked up or touched in anyway (Although she is slowly getting better, hard for me as my last cat was the total opposite, she was a furry tote bag!). This is compounded by the fact she is the cutest animal I have ever owned. Her fur feels gossamer smooth (Like everyone and thingelse in my life, she obsessed with personal hygiene). She has the sweetest purr you have ever heard and hardly ever meows and when she does its the cutest little “squeak” meow you have ever heard.
But she does love me and follows me around, plays at my feet, hops on the bed and snuggles me occasionally - yet never a lap cat and I picked her up and carried her, I would look like a boiled egg sitting on a mandoline.
Photos now - You can see how much she has grown - I guess she is around 14 months now.
Yet every day she gets a bit better and more tolerant, she is less destructive (My Christmas tree is by one of her beds and it has survived so far), and she is thriving under my care, a neighbourhood cat twice her size and fights and clobbers her, but now she is getting the upper hand and is the same size as her. I weighed her at 3.4kg in September, but can't now as she would stay still long enough (Vaccinations and flea shots are a nightmare). Yet she is a torbie, described as the red haired step child of the cat family.
This cat and I are in for the longhaul (Sounds of zooming cat and cat fighting from the neighbour cat).
