Various sets (North Yemen, Guinea, Honduras, Tonga)

In World War II, Germany looted 2 pieces of relatively sophisticated postal apparatus from an occupied country only to have 1 destroyed in a bombing of what city?

The winning entry will be the first correct response received before or at 3 PM, November 21, 2022, eastern US time. If no correct response is received, the first entry received will win. My decision as to the winner is final. Competition is open to anyone wishing to enter. Good luck!

Not lucky so far with Google, so I'll say Dresden as a wild guess, since that city was nearly completely destroyed in the Allied bombings.

More luck to the others.

Yes the search results are dominated by looted art.  I'll guess Berlin just because it seems a likely place to bring back looted stuff.  Looking forward to hearing the story on this one.

Wild guess Braunschweig.

Wild guess Hamburg

Wild guess Aachen?

Lots of German cities left. Hint: One apparatus, which survived the war, was taken to the borough of Steglitz in Berlin. An identical apparatus was taken to another location and was destroyed the next year.

Keep guessing, my friends!

Is this from your famously good search skills or one of your famously good guesses?  I was waiting for you to jump in after a clue.  I'll keep looking just in case.

Just a wild guess.  I pretty much found nothing on search.  Got the clue that the city actually was in Germany so made a guess.

One machine was at Steglitz, so the other should be at … Leipzig 😜

Perhaps a braille printing machine ?

Maybe the city was only German during the war?  How about Danzig?  Germany overprinted stamps there, but would they need looted equipment to do that?  So 2 pieces of equipment stolen but one left there to be used, and was later destroyed?

I realize I'm creating a detailed guess out of nothing.

Edit: my story doesn't match the clue very well.

waisaacs, I believe you're overthinking things.

I get that a lot

One more hint: The city I am looking for was proposed, among others, to be given by Germany to the Netherlands as war reparations but the US nixed the proposal.

Cologne?

Cologne, which was supposed to be names Keulen.

Alright, found a list of the German areas proposed to be transferred to Germany to Netherlands:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_annexation_of_German_territory_after_the_Second_World_War#Areas_to_be_annexed

Since Cologne was already been picked, I'll go with Osnabrück. There are others yet to be picked by the other participants.

Monchengladbach

Congratulations, allexis! The city was known as Gladbach at the time. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mönchengladbach. The article linked by allexis explains the automated postal sorting machines taken by Germany.

Thanks to the rest of you who participated. Watch for next time and good luck if you decide to participate again.
