Malaysian currency was renamed from dollar to ringgit on 28 August 1975: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malaysian_ringgit

The currency

    • Ringgit (1967-date)

can be splited to

  • Malaysia:
    • Dollar (1967-1975)
    • Ringgit (1975-date)

Let's not confuse everything, the sign for a Malaysian ringgit is the $ sign, the sign for a Mexican peso coin is a $ sign….

Can it not be Dollar $ and then Ringgit $ as a compromise?

I would vote for ringgit.

I don't like the Taiwan dollar either, it should be called Yuan.

I talk about the name, not the sign. 😉

I do not know about Taiwan currency but in case of Malaysia, according Wikipedia and the reference used, since 1975 is named “ringgit” and between 1963 and 1975 the official name was “dollar”:

August 1975 - Change of name of the Malaysian currency

Following the gazette of Malaysian Currency (Ringgit) Act 1975 on 28 August 1975, the name of the unit of currency in Malaysia was legally changed to "ringgit" and "sen", replacing "Malaysian dollars" and "cents".

Malaysian Dollar, see your link:

June 1972 - Adoption of USD as the intervention currency

Following the dismantling of the Sterling Area by the UK government in May 1972, the Malaysian government adopted the USD as the intervention currency in place of sterling on 24 June 1972. Parity with USD was maintained at USD1 = M$2.81955 and the Bank adopted a wider margin with new support rates of USD1 = M$2.7570 and 2.8820

M$ = Malaysian Dollar?

I'm convinced🙂

Look at the coins and notes. The word dollar never appeared. Ringgit was always the official name in Malay (if Wikipedia is correct), so that's the name to use throughout.

Coins of 1 ringgit https://en.numista.com/catalogue/index.php?e=malaisie&ct=coin&tb=y&tc=y&tn=y&tp=y&tt=y&cat=y&ca=3 use “$1” before 1975 N#7906 and “1 ringgit” after 1975 N#5881.

Banknotes https://en.numista.com/catalogue/index.php?e=malaisie&ct=banknote&tbb=y&tbc=y&tbl=y&tbt=y&cat=y&ca=931 use  “$” and “ringgit” before 1997 and “RM” and “ringgit” after 1997.

I read again Wikipedia:

The Malay names ringgit and sen were officially adopted as the sole official names in 28 August 1975. Previously they had been known officially as dollars and cents in English and ringgit and sen in Malay, and in some parts of the country this usage continues.

It is complicate… It seems that after 1975 only is named “ringgit” (symbol “RM”) and before was named in both languages: “dollar” (symbol “$”) and “ringgit”.

Wikipedia is not truth controlled, but it's quite often practical.

I do not see the reason for split.
