Where to buy coins and notes in Dubai?

Hi Numista folks,

I am travelling to Dubai for work in May and I was wondering if there is any good shop there where I could browse and buy coins and notes? Can't find anything genuine-looking on the internet. I'm particularly interested in good quality AED issues, including collector coins, although I realise these might be quite rare and expensive with AED having a relatively short history.

Thanks for any advice.

Use your search machine, please. Yahoo gives a result with this search “UAE coin shops”!

Dubai is the easiest place in the world to get scammed for collectibles and precious metals. Scammers there are from few particular countries which i dont want to name and usually sell things like that in small gold and silver shops. If you dont know what you are doing, dont buy there. It is not place for the faint hearted lol. And temptation to buy stuff there is huge.

Hello,

You may want to consider the shops listed in the Outings sections (numismatic outings in UAE), namely Numisbing and the Dubai branch of the Central Bank of UAE.

numisbing doesn't answer!

Thanks all. Yeah I have posted this precisely because search engines do not turn up anything reliable (mostly third party online stores, which are not actually in Dubai). Numisbing I think is no longer trading and should be delisted from Numista as a closed business. I would imagine CBUAE is the place to go, however they do not seem to have anything in stock anymore at this time (I have looked up their website). They have not issued any coins since 2021 or so.

Thanks for the advice on scamming - you can never be too careful!

I think i could explain why no collectible numismatics shops there.

UAE government takes a great pride in tourists coming there and they dont want any bad press whatsoever if someone gets scammed. I wouldnt be surprised they just all of a sudden close collectibles shops due to local people complaining. Same goes with brothels.

Secondly, local people are more into jewellry and luxury goods there so numismatics are related and bound to few foreigners staying there, and when they leave all these shops just close. Gold and silver shops are plentiful and it is possible to find gold stuff, for example i bought gold 20 francs there and luckily was genuine.

That makes sense! Thanks for your reply.

xrp, do you know about the Dubai coins museum? Is it worth a visit?

I think it is free to visit and you can go there if you stay nearby. Museums in Dubai are quite nice in general.

A must see for any coin & history aficianados.

Just as a follow up, I got a message from CBUAE saying that currently they only sell commemorative coins at their Abu Dhabi branch, so no luck for me!

I myself live in Abu Dhabi, so if you would like to buy a commemorative coin, you must fill out the following form with the name of the coin (that is in stock) that you wish to buy. You then pickup at one of the locations of CBUAE.

As to NumisBing, I've never been there, but I hear that it's still a working coin shop.
