One gold dollar 1853- is it genuine or a counterfeit ? [solved]

Is this a genuine one dollar 1853 coin or a counterfeit ,from the same time  ? It is sales on price of a gold coin. The design resembles me little ,to California gold coins ,but this is only a guess.

These coins sell for much more than the value of the gold they contain. Sadly, your coin appears to be a fake. Here's a real one for comparison:

I know where there are two correct-weight fake 1868s.

fake. the head is tilted way too back, and the lips are puckered.

Thank you all for your help. The coin looked odd to me . Now I can be certain that it is just a fake from the same period. I suppose as gold was cheaper back then ,making such counterfeit was a easy thing to do.

Not from the same period, it's probably a modern fake.

I disagree. This feels contemporary due to the crudeness of the “3” in the date. Check the Bad Metal site and send Winston Zack this image. Could be valuable.

Why would a contemporary fake be made out of gold when the spending value of the coin was basically tied to the amount of gold in the coin? That makes no sense to me.  It makes more sense that a modern fake would be made out of gold since the value would be much higher than the melt value.  Maybe Winston knows?

I agree this type of gold coin would not be made of gold but probably brass, bronze or a mixture of this type of alloy. But mid-19thC CCC U.S. gold pieces command some good money if its a variety listed in Zack's Gold Dollar section of his current book. These are highly collectible if he feels its contemporary of the period. The crudeness of the date and design IMO takes this out of the 20thC Chinese modern forgery category and possibly being a period CCC issue.

Thanks. Did you mean mid 20th century? The original coin was minted in the mid 19th century.
