Coins Coins Everywhere - need some help

Howdy from TX.

I inherited a bunch of coins mostly US coins. The bulk being regular rolled coins,  and I would like to know what is the best process to go through them? It seems like there is so much to look for and getting in the weeds with this stuff seems pretty easy. I already went through 5000 wheat pennies looking for key dates and errors. How would some of you approach it? I do have a current red book, a loupe and a microscope so I can see the coins better.

I would just like to be able to weed out what isn't worth keeping. Separate the sheep from the goats.

Thanks

I'm sorry for your loss, and congratulations on your inheritance.

The first thing you need to do is figure out your goals. Are you going to build a collection of your own (selecting some from the rolls) or are you planning to sell everything?

For your own collection you should think about the scope of your collection, then go through and find everything that matches your goals.

For the material you want to sell there is a tradeoff: The more effort you put in the higher price you can get. But you need to put some value on your time – if you don't enjoy searching and marketing the coins then you should consider bulk sales. Go to a few dealers and get offers. Cataloging in detail and selling the coins individually can get more money, but you need to understand the coins to describe them well, produce good descriptions, offer them in places buyers will look. And the sales will come over time and you need to ship – unless you set up a shop in which case you have a much higher overhead.
