Potosí 8 Escudos 1794 - Error? [solved]

3 posts • viewed 50 times

I recently acquired a 1794 8 Escudos milled coin from the Potosí mint (picture attached, N#61823). While examining the reverse lettering, I noticed an anomaly on the inscription. In place of "AUSPICE · DEO · IN · UTROQ · FELIX ·", the letter "I" in "FELIX" appears to be laid over an "E" ("FELEX", see picture).

I've thoroughly searched online resources and archives but haven't been able to find any other coins from this mint and period with this particular characteristic. Could this be a previously unreported mint error, a known variation, or am I just seeing things?

I'd appreciate any insights you might have on this, and whether this anomaly could significantly impact the coin's value. Thank you!

Welcome to the forum!  And congratulations on adding such a great coin to your collection.

I can find one other coin struck using this same reverse die:  https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=2102222.

As far as I can tell, it doesn't command a premium.

Thanks for your warm welcome and information provided! It's interesting that you were able to find another coin struck with the same (defective?) die. Interestingly, the obverse also appears to be struck from the same obverse die, based on my comparison!
