United States • ¼ Dollar "Washington Quarter" (Delaware; Pattern) - mint D???

After buying another lot of coins, I saw a strange 1/4 dollar. It is very different in color from the usual ones...

Then I saw a separate Pattern section... but it says that there is only P (Mint of Philadelphia), but I have D (Mint of Denver) on the coin???

Is this a mistake, a joke, a fake, or is this possible?

Weigh it. There's quite a large difference in the two coins. It it weighs the same as a normal quarter then somebody plated it.

The usual weight... probably someone's joke... but why ?

Because a real one sells for thousands of dollars or just for the fun of it.

Hello,

When the quarters came out, one of the  TV coin guys was selling sets of gold plated and platinum plated state quarters at a premium.   They are novelties and the plating is considered to be post mint damage.
