1858 Gothic Florin. I think it is genuine but noticed a raised line (die crack?) just before the date letter m. Not sure if this makes it a candidate as a possible fake? Weight and measurements are all correct, done ping and sliding magnet test, all seems fine just that raised line makes me unsure. Purchased recently from a stamp collector, he just had this one random coin that he knew little about and just wanted to sell it to buy more stamps. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. This is my first ever post to a forum ever so hope I have done all correct. Thank you.

Look genuine (or a very well made fake) with even strike

I agree - it looks genuine. And for info, it looks like the variety with closely spaced “ccc” in the date (Bull 2839).

Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Much appreciated.

So the die break would not be problematic regarding the florin being genuine? Are die breaks known to exist in genuine gothic florins?

im 90% certain it’s genuine with a well defined die break, sadly the deep scratches on the obverse have ruined a beautiful coin, the only date run I own are the gothic florins.

The deep scratches are sad to see but purchased the florin anyway. I just admire the detail and pretend the scratches are not there. Gothic florins are my favourite, have not long started to collect, have several in varying grades so far.

Thank you for the information regarding the variety, very interesting.

Die cracks are quite common on genuine Gothic florins. The Mint had difficulty finding steel of a suitable grade for the dies, and they wore out very quickly.
