Guidelines question: Should we really not split dates in lettering fields? [solved]

I fixed a spelling error in N#214611 and I noticed there was white space in the middle of the date in the lettering field.

The coin lettering guidelines say:

  • Do not split words and dates that are interrupted by design features.

(The banknote lettering guidelines say “Do not split blocks of text…” but don't explicitly mention dates.)

Based on that guideline I edited the lettering field to “1623” instead of “16 23” as the date is interrupted by the design feature (the arms). That change was rejected by @silvergeek because there is a tradition of showing the split in the lettering and it was mentioned that @Compendium allowed date splitting as the German States referee. @silvergeek said this should be discussed before I make more changes.

Should the lettering field show the literal spacing of text (“16 23”) as some referees believe, or the literal text as it is interpreted by humans ("1623") as the guidelines currently state

I just did not accept the changes on that for the time being just waiting for more info as to why that guideline was put in place

I confirm dates should not be split due to designs.

Sorry if I failed to apply this rule which led to misunderstanding

Ok welp moving on that will be done that way I have quite a few to edit now lol

@Compendium just clarifying so I know this means that if separated but on the same line that is the same.

So in the lettering this has to have 1598 not 15 98 even though that is what is on the coin. This would also apply to mint officials initials that are divided by the design of the coin right?

N#320077 is an example for mint officials lettering.

The coin has IL (orb) R. The current lettering is “IL R”. Should it be “ILR”?

(I don't think I've done this consistently.)

There is no benefit of not splitting the years they should pup up somewhere else for searches sake.

Yes if initials are for one people we dont split

The benefit is readability, hence the guidelines

What we want to avoid is contributors trying to mimic coin/note design with blank spaces and lines
