I just bought an 1849 godless florin on ebay. I don’t know if it’s real or fake. Some people say if there is a dot on the left side of the portrait, it’s fake. Could someone please identify this coin? Many thanks!

Weight, diameter, edge photo? Compare:

I haven’t received it yet. But I suspect it is fake because there is a dot in the area to the left of the queen.

I would not jump to conclusions at this point as what is done is done. Until you have it in hand, there is no way to say with any certainty. Lets see what others say about what you purchased in the meantime.

Edit. Old related thread and it mentions the “dot”

Weight is 11.30g , diameter is 28.13mm

Is that your hand and information or what the seller it telling / showing you?

Yes, that is my hand. And I weighted it by myself. This information only indicates it is made of silver, but it doesn’t mean it is authentic.

All I can tell you is that I can find no fault with it. Honest patina, honest wear, dings and marks that should be expected and the finer details look correct. Nothing artificial about it.  It looks right, it weighs right, diameter, edge, etc, etc. So far, everything adds up in my mind. If it is a counterfeit, it is a very, very good one as far as I am concerned.. Perhaps some experienced Brits can weigh in on this one as well. If their is something out of the ordinary which you may have not disclosed, that could lead to another conclusion or red flag such as where it came from and what you paid for it.

I bought it on eBay, and it cost me over 300 pounds. I just found another Godless Florin on eBay which has the same dot and scratches. That makes it more suspicious.

Based on the “dot” alone, I would say this is a fake.

Does the eBay seller accept returns?

The dot looks like a casting bubble, hence I think it’s a fake. but another fake pointer I have come across recently on one coin is the font in the 9 of the date the fake one has a tail on the nine

It is true that a misshapen “9” in the date is another pointer, as well as the “dot”. Sometimes fakes show both these features, sometimes just one of them (like the original poster's coin).

Here is the date on a fake:

and here on a genuine coin:
