1990 Danish 20 Kroner variant?

8 posts • viewed 140 times

Hello! I recently came across a 1990, 20 Kroner coin from Denmark that has a few differences compared to the image on Numista. The image on the bottom is the example from Numista and the coin above is the one I have. The 9's on my coin do not have the same detail on the bottom curl, as well they seem thicker and more rounded in general. The initials “LG” and “JP” also look quite different on my coin as well as the mint mark. Is this a known variant or maybe just an error?

I think it's just a worn coin vs. a non-worn coin.

I think RSirian is right.

Thank you for the feedback! I really want to be able to learn how to identify this so I don't have to keep bothering everyone on the forum. How exactly can you tell? The numbers look so different to me and even the initials “LG” seem to be thicker lettering and more rounded. Are there any tools I can use to really determine? How does wear on a coin affect these sorts of things, or am I simply seeing things that aren't there? 😅😅

There is a clear indication of wear to the high points, to confirm this I have also checked my Bunc example of the coin,

Thanks also for the feedback! Are there perhaps any images you can share? I'd like to train my eye a bit and become familiar with wear. I've done some research but it would be great to have some direct pointers. :)

The photo in the catalogue is an excellent image of the coin, what you should do is first compare the high points on the coin and look for differences in the two, the high points are always the first to show wear which will always give a different appearance to the coin, when I started collecting in 1963 I just took every coin to be the same regardless of condition but as you become more experienced then you become more discerning. If you want a certain coin buy what you can afford at the time and look to improve later, coin collecting is a fantastic hobby and doesn’t have to be expensive, collect to suit your pocket. As a footnote I have a quite worn Irish 1943 penny in my tray which I will never part with, it’s the first non UK coin I ever found and is more precious to me than any of the others.
