JFK half dollar question [solved]

3 posts • viewed 119 times

I found a 1968 JFK half dollar that the mint mark “D” is almost touching JFK's neck. I could not find any information on  this being an error. Is it a common error that it is not really talked about or something else? Any help is, as always, very much appreciated. The three pictures are 1) obs 2) close up of mint mark 3) close up of normal mint mark

Thank you

Chris

Mint marks in 1968 were added to the finished dies by hand. A mint worker took a hammer and a letter stamp and hit the stamp with the hammer to put the mint letter on the die.  Every die could have the location slightly different.  Obviously if it was too far away from the desired location the die would be scrapped (and the mint worker retrained or worse). Not an error. With each die making maybe 100,000 coins there are plenty like yours.

Rsirian1,

Thank you for the information.
