Elizabeth I Penny 'tre-foils' [solved]

3 posts • viewed 60 times

Hi, I have this halfpenny which would appear to be ER I 5th issue.  However, the ‘pellets’ on rev show as ‘trefoils’ for which I can find no reference.  Coin not in good condition so apologies for pics.  The mm appears to have been adulterated.

Anyone any suggestions or comments?  All advice gratefully received

Weight 0.29g, 10.3mm diam.

Many thanks

Kevin

Hi Kevin, the only portcullis halfpennies listed for Elizabeth I are the 6th and 7th issues.

It does seem odd that the mintmark has been obliterated, or may just be wear.

Similar for the pellets on the reverse, it may have been a worn die, possibly.

Just because you can't see it ... doesn't mean it isn't there - Anon.

Hi and thanks for your interest.

You touch on another point in respect to the coin.  Spink only lists 6th and 7th for portcullis halfpennies.   Withers (Galata p154) does list 5th Issue portcullis halfpennies.  In the illustrations there, Withers only  show ‘bolts’ on portcullis for 5th!  Confusing!

Thanks again

Kevin
