Hello all,

I bought this coin recently and I need some help locating this as it states it is from Mysore but i cannot see the coin on here.

The trouble is that it is locked up in an NGC slab which prevents me from getting any weights or measurements asides from an estimated 7mm in diameter and being told by a reputable dealer that it is a gold composition coin.

I hope this helps!

This is I believe the only one in Numista.

N#50626

From SCWC:

From the reverse photo, it looks more like N#62286 .

Both photos would need to be rotated to match with the catalog photos.

You may be right. I was going by the NGC Cert and their designation as Tipu Sultan Patan.

Thats much better! Thank you for the help.

I know NGC holders are hard to decipher but I am glad this forum could make it happen.

So NGC's attribution is wrong.

So NGC's attribution is wrong.

Yes, but NGC are very happy to take your money - frequently more than the actual value of the coin, even though they sometimes display the coin wrongly orientated because they can't read the oriental script. Where would they have got their identification from ? The same as everyone else so probably Krause which is chock full of errors for Asian coins.

This is the correct orientation of the coin for reading the mint in Persian, it doesn't mention zarb (struck) just Farruqhi. I would say the date definitely does not take priority in which way up the coin is displayed

I see. Thanks. Can't blame KM for this one though. NGC just picked the wrong one from SCWC.

That's no excuse for NGC though, I can read the mint on your coin and clearly they have no-one who is able to do that, if so it more or less means they should not offer their services for hand struck Asian coins if they are not capable of even knowing the right way up.

I do agree with that, there is a ton of coins out there and more so needs more dedicated research to treating these coins respectfully and dutifully as a historical price that represents a culture. Especially  given that fact that I nearly didn't buy this because I couldn't initially locate the right coin, who knows of others having coins that have been misidentified or being left in a box marked ‘unknown’.
