Grade for a 1868 "Shield Nickel" [solved]

8 posts • viewed 79 times

Hello there!

I would like to have a grade for this coin, and I would also like to have a value since on eBay I found coins that had been sold for between $20 and $300…

It still has some mint luster.

(In this photo the coin is yellowed because of the lighting I used, but when under indirect sunlight it actually has a green patina with traces of yellow on the obverse and a green patina with traces of yellow on the revese.)

Thank you to anyone who can help me.

I would say (in my non-expert) opinion AU50.  PCGS price guide for that is US $140. Here are some sales:

Nice coin!

I tried using the PCGS Photograde, but since I didn't see any coins with traces of use only in the spots you indicated, I thought it would be better to ask here.

XF45 on Photograde shows both types of wear I indicated but more so. I felt that was too low and bumped it up a grade. Your opinion is as good or better than mine.

Your judgment seems sound to me, but the price you mentioned would be for a graded coin, not a raw one like mine, right?

Yes for graded coins.
