East Africa Florin 1920 [solved]

3 posts • viewed 72 times

I’ve recently acquired this East African Florin from 1920, would like to know whether it is real and what the grade would be and maybe the price range. I’m under the impression that the coin is quite rare and NGC even has a page for counterfeit detection of this type. Also, what makes the coin so rare? Should I get it sent in for grading too?

Thank you so much!

30mm is the measured diameter, the weight is 11.6g as tested by the coin shop.

This coin isnt “rare” in the numismatic sense, mintage figure is over one million. But it was a short run, so definitely desirable in higher grades.

Is your coin real? The details look right given the wear patterns. This is one time that close-ups in focus would help. The NGC page suggests looking at the rim / denticles and the lion. From your photos everything looks right but better pics could help others chime in.

I'd say your coin's condition is “fine”, maybe worth US$30 to $50, I would not bother to grade the coin, because if it is real, it's value doesnt justify the cost of grading.

Thank you for the prompt reply! I’m unsure of the mintage figure as numista did not provide one. I would go off NGC’s one then. Thank you so much! I’ve looked at a few examples in mint state, mine seems to somewhat be there, given that those examples have quite a weak strike, but I do see an amount of contact marks on my example
