Austria/Germany- What causes these lines on silver coins?

Interested to hear theories...I have a few Austria/Hungary coins with this, maybe some German ones too.  Looks like it is intentional and decorative, or maybe they were wrapped with string or ribbon to a box or envelope as a gift...?

probably some heathen has had it cellotaped to something  :x
You had me confused, I thought these were two sides of the same coin :.

Probably caused by tape. Here's a related big warning: Rubber bands contain sulfur and they will create an ugly black band on any silver item, even through plastic!
I've only seen them on one side of a coin- I suppose it could be a rubber band, and the coin was at the top or bottom of the stack...
Well spotted must have been from a rubber band.

I think a rubber band would cause the opposite colouration: dark bands on a light surface. This is more likely the work of tape or plastic.
Or a piece of cloth like a shoelace or something.  I've got and Austrian Corona with similar marks to the one you've shown

It could also be that the rest of the coin that was not under the rubber toned over the years, or the chemicals in the plastic discolored it.

Yes, but the point was that rubber causes coins to discolour, so they wouldn't look nice and clean underneath, Which is why I think it's more likely to be ribbon or shoelace or tape.
Sometime there was a cellotape on it. I have a similar coin.

Seems like in Austria it was common to cellotape your coins.  :D
