Saw the old topic, very interesting. There's basically 4 types of coins:

- regular circulating coins: e.g. Washington quarters
- commemorative circulating coins, such as the state quarters
- commemorative coins issued at face value, such as the UK 5 pound coins or German 10 euro coins
- pieces of metal issued by official mints at way above face value. Those are nothing less than a scam and worth no more than melt value in my opinion.

I personally only collect regular coins, but can tolerate the commemorative ones issued at face value.

Anyone from Poland who can tell if those commem 2 Zloty coins are issued at face value?
The classify is this:
circulating coins (2 euro for example)
commemorative circulating coins (2 euro German states for example)
non-circulating legal tender coins(5 euro, 10 euro.....)
non-circulating not legal tender (basically tokens)
"Legal tender" and "circulating coins" are not the same. In Croatia all coins are legal tender. Even 1 lipa and even 1000 kuna gold coin. If You want to pay something with it, the seller must accept it. That will never happen because nobody is crazy to pay with 1000 kuna gold coin but still. 1000 kuna gold coin is not circulating issue. You can't find it in circulation. 1 lipa used to be circulating but from 2009 it is non-circulating. The National Bank of Croatia wanted that 1 and 2 lipa coins were not circulating any more. The same is with 25 kuna coins. The National Bank of Croatia wanted them to stop circulating and they did it.
