Cleaning Silver proof

9 posts
Hello   :)
My grandmother gave me a silver proof coin.
Unfortunately there is fingerprints on the coin, the coin always been on capsule and now at capsule +it's very shiny but with fingerprints  :snif:
I know that cleaning is bad and harming.
But I'm still want to know, is there any safe way, only to remove the fingerprints without harming the coin ?
If there is a safe way, any advice will be appreciated.
Try dipping it in isopropyl alcohol (also called rubbing alcohol or surgical spirits). It removes grease and oils but doesn't harm the surface of the coin.
ok thx
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Don't do ANYTHING to that, it's proof! Don't touch proof coins, even if they already have been (as long as they are MS).
Alright thank you :)
Perhaps Zulu didn't read when I said "It doesn't affect the surface of the coin"  Cleaning with acetone, acids, household cleaning products of course is a no-no with proof coins.  But dipping a coin in a little bowl of alcohol will do no damage whatsoever.
Funny story, apparently it's hard to buy bulk quantities of isopropyl alcohol these days because it's used in the manufacture of crystal methamphetamine.  The most I could find that a pharmacy would sell me was 50mls, until I went to a pharmacy in a "bad" part of town with a bit of a reputation.  I asked there and they said "how much do you want?  they could sell it in drums of up to 20 litres  B.
Go to Wal-Mart.
For really pure alcohol with no residue go to liquor store and get EVERCLEAR (198 proof). Many alcohols have all kinds of additives that will leave residues.
