This was my first thought too - but the Byzantine/Greek numeral system had the letters M I K E (and the roman X too).
Hi Roy,
It looks like one of the late Roman rulers Monogram coins but I cant think which one it is off top of my head.
I will have a look when I get 5 mins.

Thanks for your suggestion. I typed in monogram of Marcian and came up with the following link:
http://www.ancientcoins.ca/RIC/RIC10/RIC10_ZenoE.htm

ZENO. Second reign, 476-491 AD. Æ Nummus (0.84 gm, 12h). Thessalonica mint. DN ZENOC P F AVG (?), Pearl-diademed, draped bust right / Monogram, THS in exergue. RIC X 958 (Image courtesy CNG)

What do you think?
Wow - that's a very intresting era ! Great stuff !
Hi Roy,
I f you rotate picture 1 180* clockwise that will give you the correct image, your coin appears to have the symbols above and below which makes me think it is more likely to be RIC X 959.
Even in that condition its a very nice and rare coin, nice pick up.
I have a Marcian in my collection but not yet snagged a Zeno, PM me if it doesn't fit in your collection Roy.
LOL just re-read my post, you can turn it anti-clockwise if you want ;) I must be tired :Zz:

Thanks for the confirmation and revised RIC#. I have rotated the coin as suggested and will enter it in the catalogue.

Roy
I am at a quandary as to how to enter this coin.

Info I have on the coin is:
ZENO. Second reign, 476-491 AD. Æ Nummus (0.84 gm, 10mm). Thessalonica mint. DN ZENOC P F AVG (?),

Do I enter it under Rome (ancient)
Rome Provinces
or Byzantine.
Ancient Roman Roy.
I still like it ;)
