OK, so if you're asking me I have come up with a fun game I'd like to call "Pay the message forward". The rules are simple and the game is easy. Well, it's probably impossible, but still easy.
I've had the idea for years, but I just didn't know how to involve people. Starting up a Facebook page felt just simply dumb, but now I have made my first entrance, so I thought this could be a good place to start.
So, you know when you sometimes get your change and someone has written something on the note? I myself recently sold a 5 AED note with some writings on (think it was a number), and I've always wondered what the reason for writing on the banknote was.
Then I began to wonder. What if I wrote something on a banknote? What is the odds I would ever get it back? How long would it take? Or maybe one of my friends got it in change? Would it be from the same place, or would it even be in the same city?
After thinking like this for years, I have now started my "project" "Pay the message forward!". It's simple! This is what you do:
You write something on a banknote.
Take a photo of it (preferably where even the serial number is shown to make it easier to identify)
Post it here
Spend it
Post the photo here and say where you spent it (city and place)
All this in the sae day, to make it more "authentic".
If you any day would recieve a note with something written on, you could check here to see if it comes from anyone here. If you do, then you should:
Take a photo
Post it here
Tell us where you got it (city and place)
Then you spend it again, and write time, place, and city.
Let's see how far across the nation, the world, our messages can go!
Hey ngdawa I just logged in a US 2 dollar bill in wheresgeorge.com . Hey about I send to you log in your country. Send to another numista member. And have them send to another. You want to see if we can get this bill logged in every country and have it go around the world a few time.
I am thinking of maybe setting up it own post "numista US 2 dollar bill wheresgeorge.com" So we can keep an eye where it is. Maybe send a free gift coin with it. When we log in at wheresgeorge.com in notes we can put numista coin swapping. Well you think about it?

sounds like fun! it would actually be pretty cool if you send the $2 note together with coins from your country equal to $2..
let's get more people's attention to this and probably we could get a few more stop overs between the us and korea! we'll need at least 12 more people to break the record!
How do you guys want to do this. Me I would like to see how many countrys we can get. The 2 dollars of change I think would make it to heavy. Would like to keep that down. Maybe go with a swap.

I just thought it would be a fun idea, so see what two dollars looks like in your mates currency. It's like we're sending a 2 dollar note around the world, and send an extra two dollar change in local currency to make it a "around the world swap". The idea was like, lets say you send from Mexico to Brazil. Then you put 38 pesos in coins (which equals 2 dollars) and send it. Then the receiver will keep the pesos and add two dollars worth in reais (6.35), and send it forward. I didn't think about the weight though. For some it could be pretty expensive.
Otherwise we could just add a list though, like a an A4 paper sheet, where you simply write your name, city, and country. Then we can track where it's been so far, and when it comes back to where we started, we can post the list here.

Also, write the date you received/sent it. Then we can track how long time it took for it to travel around the world.
Quote: "redsmithstudios"As for sending change with it, yes it would be too expensive, but why not send your lowest denomination bill with it? That would add 0 weight!
that would work depending on where you are..if i would still be in sweden the lowest denomination would be 20 sek (2.2 usd), but here in korea the lowest bill is just worth 0.88 usd..but other countries, like canada with the 5 cad as the lowest, will have to "pay up" 3.66 usd..that doesn't seem fair..

Yes you're right, I was wondering about that, it wouldn't be fair. You could include any foreign bill that you have in cases like this, most of us have some old low value bills lying around. Or make it an option, but not mandatory, could include stamps perhaps.
Taking a break from swapping for a while, but still interested in pre 1799 Spanish coins, I will make time for that!
Send a bill, keep a bill sounds like fun. I'd like to play if we did that! We'd have to plan a path or be allowed to use one from any country so we don't end up with the same thing that we are adding....
Quote: "ngdawa"All right, let's go with banknotes! That'll be much lighter to send as well, so I like it!
Yeah, let's find a bunch of people who wanna join. Then we make a route, and then we can begin!
Ahoy!!!! Let's start with low VALUED BANKNOTES!!!
Do the banknotes need to be in new condition or will circulated be acceptable? Should the banknotes have value?
For example, I'm awfully fond of notgeld and I have some circulated duplicates. Would those be too low value and common to share, or would anyone else enjoy receiving them? [Personally, I would be happy to receive such notes but just from reading other forum posts I realize we collect a variety of different things. I could also add an additional surprise banknote to keep it from being too predictable ...]
I don't know about the rest of us, but I for one am a banknote collector and would love to recieve German notgeld (as long as they're not in too poor condition). I mainly collect UNC banknotes, but since I won't be able to provide UNC notes to the next person, I don't reckon I have any right to demand to recieve UNC. I will pick the nicest ones though.
We're not talking about high valued banknotes (unless you really want to), but either the lowest valued denomination of your country's banknotes, or other world banknotes. I, personally, don't think it has to exceed the value of $2, since it's a 2 dollar note we're sending around the globe, but it's up to each one of us to decide.
Maybe you can also add more than 1 banknote if you feel like it, so the next person has some choice when picking a note ... or more if he/she adds at least the same amount of notes. Like this the selection of notes can increase a bit during the trip and you can decrease the possibility of receiving a note you yourself already have in abundance (especially if the trip is planned with sending on to local or neighbouring collectors).
And BTW ... I'd be more than happy to receive some Notgeld :-)
Just call me Bram
No new swaps for the moment, still too many half-ongoing swaps to clean up!
