Help Needed / Weird Reeded Edge - Israel KM# 13.1 / 1954 . 50 Prutah

8 posts
Hi All,

Need some help here. Can someone take a look at the reeding on the edge of this coin and let me know if it looks legit. This coin/year was minted with both smooth (KM# 13.2) and Reeded (KM# 13.1). The reeded version has a high catalog value relative to the smooth version (15x value). Something bothers me about the reeding so I figured I'd ask others to comment. Condition of coin is UNC but my images are not that great.

I may just be paranoid.... (I Hope....:8D)

Thanks in advance,
Aaron

Hello,
This page might help you. http://typesets.wikidot.com/israel:50-pruta
There are 2 varieties.
The 1956 issues generally has a smooth edge; only 1949 issues has a reeded edge.
I don't think there are coins more than 28 million pieces are so rare but the fact is that only the 1949 proof coins with a mintage of 20,000 are hard to find,

Regards

Subha,

Your info is way off... Sorry.

50 Prutah was not minted in '56 in any of the 3 varieties (not 2 varieties)
KM#
13.1, Cop-Nic / Reeded Edge
13.2, Cop-Nic / Smooth Edge
13.3 (or 13.2a) Nic Clad Steel / Smooth Edge.

50 Prutah was only minted in '49 and '54

Reeded edges are on both the '49 and '54 issues of KM# 13.1

1954 KM# 13.1 50 Prutah has a mintage of only 250,000 which makes it very rare.

Now that we got that settled, my question was ONLY on the reeding on the edge is it looks suspicious or not.

Well, I realize it now, that I confused 1956 with 1954. Sorry.
Anyone care to comment on edge reeding?

If you suspect the reeded edge was "faked" to give more value to the coin, then I would measure the diameter as precisely as possible and compare with the official stats from the Israel Mint.

For reference:

50 pruta 1954 cupro-nickel
50 pruta 1954 nickel plated steel

Note the slightly different diameters, unless one was rounded up, the other rounded down.

Diameters are the same as per Bank Of Israel (link).

From the images I provided does the edge dies the edge look odd?
