To Grade or not to Grade? (Yes! You've seen it before!)

Hello!
You've seen it before! It was my entry to the. MPCC Europe category!
While not a very high value coin, I really like it and I'd like to try and protect it's patina. I can take advantage of a local coin dealer shipping out to NGC in a few weeks and get it graded for 40$ or so. I'll be posting a few others for which I have the same question.
1: Would you?
2: what grade would you assign it?
3: THANKS!

Loruca

I collect anything: If it's Italian or Italian states i collect it even more!
1. No, because I don't like grading companies, they're overpriced and you can actually send the same coin to 3 different companies and get 3 different grades, and I don't like the thought of sealing away coins forever and ever amen inside a slab

2. AU-UNC

3. You're welcome
What? Me Worry
I was just thinking of asking for a grade for my own coin of this type and date (just now posted here on the Free Discussion forum)! I won't hijack your thread, though. :`

Anyway, I'm behind Neil on all points, more so with regards to the expense of professional grading (which is really more for sellers who hope to turn a profit by slapping a premium on their slabbed coins anyway). If you just want to preserve the patina wouldn't a reasonably good non-PVC flip do for coins of this caliber, anyway?
That's a beautiful coin. Can't help you with Sheldon grades but it looks UNC to me.

If your local coin dealer is trying to charge you $40 to send in a coin as part of a bulk submission I'd strongly urge you to find a better dealer.
Non illegitimis carborundum est.  Excellent advice for all coins.

My understanding is he doesn't get large discounts as he only submits about 100 coins at a time 2-3 times a year. Oh, and they're Canadian dollars, so count 30 usd.
Is it still a lot?
I have no experience with grading as usually it's not something that is done to coins I collect myself.

I don't have a right lot of experience with TPGs but I'm under the distinct impression that their bulk submission rates can be as low as $5 per coin. I made enquiries at my local coin shop many years ago and I do remember being given a price which seemed reasonable. eBay is full of certified coins for $10 or less which are seemingly the residue from bulk submissions which failed to come back with the right Sheldon number. Maybe they are making thousands of submissions at a time to get such low rates?

$40, even Canadian, does seem excessive. Perhaps it's worth making a separate post and seek the opinions of those folks who have done this in the past. I'd be very interested to know the results too, I've got several coins in the $100+ price range which eventually I'll send to HA but if I could get them certified for a reasonable price it might be worthwhile.
