Counterfeit Colombia 1787 8 Escudos? [solved]

7 posts

Hello everyone,

Could you please help me figure out if these are counterfeit? They look like Charles’ III 8 Escudos minted in Colombia (mint mark SF). The first one is is 35mm in diameter, ~1.5mm thickness, 17g weight. The second one is 35mm in diameter, ~1.9mm thickness, 21g weight. The specs do not align with those listed in a catalog for this particular coin.

Thank you for your assistance!
The surface is suspicious. I am suggesting the possibility that they are cast copies. The rim migh have a point where the coin was split from the "casting tree" and filed.

Apologies, here are some pictures of the rim. It does look bizarre.
Hello

Of course cast copies !

look at the texture of the coin and the rim…

Thank you! The surfaces do look coarse, there are grains of extra metal in the fields and round micro craters from bubbles. It seems that both of them are based on the same original coin that was scraped on the left side. The rim was clearly worked on to conceal the joint.
