Just curious, what is it like being a referee?
It's like hours of research and many modification requests to process. It's fun.

How long do you think you spend per week being a referee?
It really depends on my availability and motivation. Sometimes 30 minutes, sometimes 10 hours.

Two weeks not looking to requests, so dozens of requests pending.
Not a catastroph.
I'll take care of'em this week-end.
I promiss :D

That applies to everything I do. (Hint: Taxes are low motivation)
I for one appreciate what you guys do. It must feel like you are babysitting sometimes and I am glad I don't have to do it.:O

It's good, everyone is looking at you like you are God ... but actually you barely can deal with requests. 0:)
Hello,

Very interesting. It pushes me to do a bit more than just looking at my own collection.
The catalogue I take care of becomes slowly an extension of my collection, and making it grow is muuuch cheaper than buying real coins. I sort of collect coin sheets on Numista :D
Instead of going to coin markets and shops to buy, I spend hours checking auction websites for coins that are not on Numista and get excited when I find new ones. The hunt has the same feeling, a bit easier because generally coins are identified (not always though) but info is very incomplete (size, weight, references are often lacking).
Catalogue quality, both in english and french, is my goal here. And since it is never ending, there is job for plenty of time.
I am very happy when others add coins or requests for changes and feel just the opposite of "God", I am "à votre service" dear Numista fellow collectors !

Almost without exception Numista's referees are knowledgeable and enthusiastic in equal parts. They take on a time consuming and challenging task for no reward and honestly I can't say enough good things about them. Without their efforts there would be no Numista. For the most part I've always had a good relationship with our refs but even in those cases where you just can't get along I still appreciate the efforts made.

Unfortunately the role attracts a few undesirables who misuse the position and the credibility it affords to steal coins from collectors who mistakenly believe the title is some kind of guarantee of trust. Don't feel bad, I fell for it some years ago too. They will sign up for as many positions as possible, even though they know nothing about the countries, before moving in for the kill. Fortunately most of them are pretty unpleasant and ignorant types so they're pretty easy to spot during the earlier stages. I only wish the management were more adept at spotting them before the damage is done or at least prepared to listen to those who can pick them out. The most recent example was surely a huge embarrassment for those who failed entirely to spot the scams and thieving even long after it was common knowledge.
Non illegitimis carborundum est.  Excellent advice for all coins.

What's happened to Roman Empire referees?
I made a good bunch of adds since january, but it seems no one is looking at.

How is it possible to be a referee? i would like to help for my 2 main interests, Earldom/Duchy of Savoy (especially what is called French Feudal Savoy here) and Papal States.
Thanks

What do you mean by "misuse"?
I'm referring to well documented examples of crooks becoming referees and even team members to create an impression of being decent, responsible members and subsequently misusing their position to run several scams. They're pretty easy to spot, usually full of self importance and grandstanding. The most recent one has just left the building.

I don't actually consider them referees, just unusually dedicated thieves.

Sorry for my lack of understanding, but how are they easy to spot, and how do they get their positions? Also, who was the most recent one?

When my laptop will be finally repaired, I will take a look at Roman Empire :) Sorry for the delay

Sometimes it’s a feeling of heartache from requests for "pseudo-improvements" for the catalog. If there was an opportunity to at least temporarily ban your and Ciin's requests, I would ask for this. Sorry, but I would again ask you to change the approach to improving the catalog.

Agreed.
Just because you can't see it ... doesn't mean it isn't there - Anon.
