Replica - Maximilianus rorex

Hi everyone,

I just created an account and I was wondering if anyone had more information about this coin (I have one and I would really like to finally classify it properly):

https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces32894.html

The only information I found was on Numista and there is not much. It says that it is a replica, but it doesn't say it is a replica of which coin (year, denomination, issuing country, ...). It doesn't say who made the replica and what year it was made also.

If it is really a replica, the only information that I can suppose is that the original coin was minted during one of these two periods:

- February 16 1486 to February 4 1508 under Maximilian I (more likely)
- November 1 1562 to July 25 1564 under Maximilian II

The reason I believe it is in one of these two periods is because of the legend ROREX (I believe it should be RO REX or RO. REX for ROMANUS REX or something like that). That would meen the period where Maximilianus (I or II) was only king of the romans and not emperor (Imperator Romanus). The only other thing I know is that the original coin should be from one of the countries of the Holy Roman Empire.

If someone has more information about the original coin and/or about the replica and would like to share, it would be really appreciated.

By the way, I don't know Latin, but I believe it would make more sense if it were A FACIE INIM instead of AFACIEINIM in the legend.

Since I am new and I don't really how this website works, does the website translate everything in the forum or is there a French forum and an English one? I am asking because I am wondering if I need to ask the same question in French (French is my first tongue, so I don't really mind using French or English) so more people can read it and there are more chances of getting an answer.

Best regards,

fr.numista.com is the French part and it's completely separated in the forae. So you have to ask the same question twice in two different languages. Vive le monde uni.

Thank you Sjoelund for letting me know!

I just asked the question in the French forum.

Hi everyone,

With some help in the French forum from meroic, I was able to find the coin on Internet (the page is only available in French):

https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gian_Marco_Cavalli

The original coin would be a medal made by Gian Marco Cavalli (there might be some doubts about that) in Tyrol, Austria. It would have been made in 1506 which is definitively the appropriate period (1494 (year of his wedding with Bianca Maria Sforza) to 1508 (year he became emperor)). I still don't know much about the replica itself, but at least I know about the original medal which is the most important information in my opinion.

The obverse legend would be: MAXIMILIANVS RO[MANORVM] REX ET BIANCA M[ARIA] CONI[V]GES IV[NCTI] (The E of ET faces left, so I am not sure if it means someting in particular)
The reverse legend would be: ESTO NOBIS TVRRIS FOR AFACIE INIMCI
"Maximilian, King of the Romans, and Bianca Maria joined in marriage" is the front and " Be into us, a tower of strength, I pray, in the face of our enemies" is the back. "Esto nobis turris or a facie inimici" is a line from the Roman Breviary, specifically the Itinerarium, which is invoked for protection on a trip.
This makes a lot of sense. Bianca married Maximillian, by proxy, in Tyrol in 1494 and she and her retinue then travelled to meet him. The original was made to commemorate the marriage and ask protection on the trip, if I had to guess.
The Classics major and History minor came in handy for this one.

Hi,

I didn't know that (except for the translation of the legends in Latin). It is interesting to know, thank you!
