Hello collectors,
I have started collecting banknotes. (Many thanks for all the time you put into building this catalogue!)
now I have found this one in my collection.
But since I am new here (banknotes, not coins :-)):
How can I see if this one is real or fake?
and what is the condition/value of it whenn it is (was) real?
The forgers in China are very good. I do not see anything on this note to make me think it is a fake.
The central fold is strong and there are two more folds on it. The corners are well worn but no paper is missing. I would put it very good to fine. This is not a high value bill. I saw 12 uncirculated going for 300$ US with consecutive serial numbers. This is not UNC. So under 25$ US.
In general, any of the 1949 series banknotes of the 1st generation RMB should be suspect. They are simply too valuable to counterfeit, and because they had little to no security features, it is very easy to accomplish it.
Because they were originally lithographed, a lot of the time you can spot fakes because they look 'too good.' After the litho has been done many times, it becomes less and less accurate to the original. So, if you see a great one, you are either looking at one that was early on the plate--or a fake.
As the other comment mentioned, the Chinese fakes are amazingly good--and one should be hesitant to assume it's real until proven otherwise.
Interesting! Thank you very much. I think this one is not fake, I got it from a priest from Hongkong in 1988, long long time ago, but it is not a very nice one, so not a high value as ThePoet already said. But a note with a nice story for my collection!
