Hi Guys,
I am a student and I am really interested in coins, I don't have a specific reason but they fascinate me and I would love it start collecting coins, but as I am on an allowance of £10 a week which I have to buy everything of my own I have little to spare; however I really want to collect coins, is it going to be a waste of my money or a worthwhile hobby?? Please tell me more. :)

Thanks
Olivia

The only thing you need to start collecting coins is friendships around the world. The best is to have a friend travelling around the world for his work and who came back with coins, like flight attendant !
Hello. You don't have to get valuable coins to be satisfied. Of course, this adds a lot of pleasure, but you can't have everything, especially when you're a beginner. This will come later, if you really get serious about it. Lots of interesting coins are readily available at a very low price. One tip : buy a pack with mixed coins from everywhere, you'll get a lot of new coins at once, and many doubles to swap. Plastic sheets and Mylar/cardboard holders are not expensive, a binder like the ones you use at school is perfect and will do the job, that's what I use. I don't know exactly where you live in UK, but I bet you can find a retailer, especially in big cities. Maybe there's also a collectors' club, maybe there are students at your school who also collect coins, it's worth asking them, so you'll get all started.

Thanks very much, I have found an antique place in Warwick that sells coins from as cheap as 50p! I love coins and I have an interest in them but am i wasting my time??

No, you are not wasting your time. As long as you like it, whatever you have in your collection, you are not wasting your time. I seriously began to collect some 10-11 years ago, of course when I began I didn't have a lot of things, I was 13, but I gained a lot of experience and added much more interesting stuff, and of course I have more money to spend for my collection now that I work full time. Trust me, you will achieve your collection as time goes by.

Good luck

It doesn't have to be an expensive hobby - I barely spend any money on my collection. All you need are friends who travel much, and get them to bring back as much sparechange as you can.
Also, there are coin shops that cater for low-end collectors, selling various coin lots for cheap prices (I recently went to Australia and bought 140 coins for 14AUD)

Yes, unless they are worn through. Just keep the best ones, and you're started.

If you happen to see gold coloured coins, those were minted for the King's _0th anniversary of ascension. Also, Thailand happens to mint alot of commemorative coins so look out for variants in design.

Thanks very much

I have a lot of 1 bahts as they were my only coins left and they are in mint condition, unfortunately no gold coins :(

Look for variants in the designs. They are commemorative too.
