Does the 1876 Peru Sol coin actually exist?

5 posts • viewed 200 times
I'm desperately searching for an 1876 Peru Sol coin to complete my set. I can't find it on eBay, Vcoins, cgbfr.com

The catalog here says it's "Reported, not confirmed": https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces9096.html

Another site says "Requires Confirmation": https://www.ngccoin.com/price-guide/world/search/1/?keywords=PERU||1876||Sol|PERU%201876%20Sol

It's kinda driving me crazy that this is the last coin I need to finish the set. Maybe it's very rare or it was never minted at all?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi Kevin,

The 1 SOL 1876 Y.J does exist !! But it is a Pattern, as Krause states correctly in it's 1986 edition under # PnA24.

Without beeing conclusive, researches done in Peru an in the USA, show that it was probably minted at the Philadelphia mint. I don't know how many pieces. Due to financial and political problems in Peru in that time, the coin was never mass produced (there is also no 1877 1 SOL !!) .

The only specimen I know belongs to a peruvian private collection, which I was lucky to see by myself. Compared with it's nearest "normal siblings" (1875 Y.J and 1879 Y.J) , this 1876 Y.J piece was coined on a more perfect flan and has more regular and finer designed details. Unfortunately I don't have any picture.

Hope this info helps you to (avoid) getting crazy :8D

Best regards

Thank you so much for sharing this interesting information about the 1876 sol! I wonder why the authorities felt a pattern coin was necessary in the middle of a series.

Regardless, I can now cross 1876 off my list, as it's not feasible for me to obtain.

Thanks again.

kenvintexas100,

I was just scrolling through information regarding Antique Peruvian coins and happened to see your May 31st, 2021 post regarding a 1876 sol.

I was searching for mintage #s for various year of the coins.

I might possibly have one, as I used to live in Peru and collected quite a few of the antique coins during this duration. I believe the  “Un Sol's" I possess range from 1865 and run up through the early 1900's.

If you are still seeking, text me @ 979-640-7875.  It's the easiest means of communication for myself.

Regards,

Rusty

Hi Rusty

If you happen to have the 1876 SOL kevintexas100  was looking for, I would be very thankful if you posted a nice picture of that piece which is so elusive and difficult to see.

Best regards and thanks again.
